Longarm loosed the rope from his saddle and advanced on Masters. One look at the rope and Masters went white.

"What're you going to do?" he cried.

"Put you on display. Attract attention. What we need is a diversion, and it looks like you're it."

Longarm shook open the loop, then dropped it over Masters's shoulders, tightening it quickly as soon as it reached his upper arms. Then he stepped closer and wound the rope three times around his upper torso, then knotted it so the rope would not ride up past the man's shoulders.

"What are you going to do, Longarm?" Andrea asked.

"Give this fellow here a chance to scream like a stuck pig. He's sure to draw a crowd like that."

"Speak plain."

"Watch."

Longarm turned Masters around, then kicked him gently forward, toward the lip of the ledge on which they were standing. He yelped in terror. Snugging the rope around a thin pine, Longarm pushed him again. Masters screamed and toppled off the ledge. Longarm braced himself. The rope snapped taut. Edging toward the lip of the ledge, Longarm looked down. Masters, swinging over the abyss at the end of the rope, was still screaming.

"Ranee!" he was yelling. "Get me up! Get me up!"

Longarm lowered him still further until he was swinging just above the tops of the trees on the slope below. Far below the trees, the stream was still only a distant black ribbon coiling through the gorge. The white water seemed a little closer, but Longarm still could not hear it from this height.

Moving back carefully along the rope, Longarm wrapped it securely around the pine, then knotted it.

"Now what?" asked Andrea, her dark eyes gleaming
